The area itself is wooded, though not densely. Mostly fir trees in this area. We saw a few elk and deer nearby. There are no streams or surface water in the immediate area; it sits on high ground. There are some hiking trailheads (at least two) which depart from the main paved access road. Saddle campground was ringed with a "Nature Trail"; a well-defined path of crushed gravel with occasional small signs to identify plant species and other natural features. Unfortunately, having been installed quite a long time ago, the signs rarely identified anything that was still in the vicinity.
Saddle Campground is one of three camping "loops" in this recreation area near the northern end of Lincoln National Forest. They are paved throughout, and accessible by any car. Most sites are back-in. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a cooking grate. Most are suitable for small RVs or tent camping. All sites are $20/night with an additional fee of $9 per extra vehicle. There are no RV hook-ups available to the public, but there is a source for drinking water at the entrance to each of the three camping loops. Dumpsters (no fee) and a sewer dump ($5) are at the main entrance/exit, as are hot showers ($5). Generator use is permitted 6 hours/day in 3, 2-hr increments. Our camp host took full advantage.
Wonderful place, peaceful, very clean. Tons of firewood laying around. Strongly recommend if you need to get away and become one with nature!
Bathrooms are vault-style composting toilets and are handicapped accessible. Hand sanitizer and toilet paper was provided and the bathrooms were checked regularly for cleanliness. There is no running water in any of the bathrooms. If you desire a shower, be prepared for a long walk or to drive.
Early season 5 stars late season 5 stars for those with families the area would be 5 stars if you are like me and my family to many people in the summer camp host for this area gets a 10 out of 10 stars
Silver, Saddle and Apache campgrounds are a good choice for car-camping and camping with friends (as the sites are closely-spaced). They seem less well-suited for families with small children (like ours) as there are no amenities and the terrain is steep and rocky. Still, we had a good time and I would not hesitate to return.
This is our second time camping in Lincoln National Forest and we absolutely love it. The camp hosts are all very nice, polite, and helpful. The silence is awe inspiring. Great, well maintained campsites. Highly recommended.
